Chasing The Dream

Pre-season is over, David Holdsworth has taken a long, hard look at his side’s capabilities during five pre-season friendlies, six if you count the behind closed doors game at Rotherham. With these out of the way, Holdsworth and the lads can start work on the serious stuff, chasing the dream of promotion, with the possibility of picking up a cup on the way.

We all have expectations, but in previous years we perhaps didn’t believe enough to make it happen, especially with all the negativity that surrounded the off-field activities. This year, however, is different. Off the field things are great, the ‘Three Amigos’ really helping to bring the much anticipated family feel back into our beloved club. On the pitch, Stags have an unbeaten League home record under David Holdsworth, who will no doubt want to keep that run going come August 8th.

We have a squad capable of winning the League, top players turning down offers from Football League clubs to play for Mansfield, to play for David Holdsworth, which can only be described as a positive thing. Our away form was going well under Holdsworth during the early stages of 2009, I am certain if we can re-create that form, we will really be a driving force. The only way to secure promotion, as I have mentioned before, is to finish first – to be the champions. Second is not good enough, we all know what can happen in play-off finals, an experience I never wish to witness again.

By 5pm Saturday, we will know if we can achieve the dream – some will argue that you can never tell after one game, but I say the best way to do it, the best way to gain confidence and make a real statement, is to rise to the challenge, collect three valuable points and aim for the top. A draw would be positive, but not good enough, as we’d have already given our promotion rivals an edge, and as the old saying goes ‘Give somebody an inch, they will take a mile’. I Don’t want to do the chasing, I’ve seen enough of that for a while!

Crawley visit fortress Field Mill on Saturday, looking to shatter our dreams before they’ve began – let’s get ourselves down there and raise the roof with noise. Let’s witness the start of success.

Before the season kicks off properly I always write down my predictions and seal them in an envelope, I write down what place we will finish, how well we will do in the cup competitions and who will finish top goal scorer. I invite you to do the same then perhaps when the season has finished we can all,  somehow, share our predictions.

Thanks for reading,  See you Saturday

Saturday, Football day, we all trundle down the ground, hoping to enjoy a win for our beloved team. With every win comes three points and with every three points comes a step closer to achieving the dream: Promotion. To hear the clicking of the turnstile, to smell the Bovril, to see the fresh pitch at the start of a season, in the hope every Saturday will bring success. To enjoy a beer before the game, to sample the banter with opposing fans – all good when you’re winning, all sarcastically sour when you’re not. To sing your team’s songs, to laugh at the new songs you create for players who take your eye, to enjoy football. To actually enjoy a game, without turning the other way or biting your nails. To have faith in all areas of your team. To witness moments of pure genius from your players, to see a quality goal. The tears, the tantrums, the pure emotion of football. The hope of a major cup scalp, showing the ‘big boys’  who is boss. The final day, shedding tears of joy when the captain lifts the trophy, the whole team doing the celebratory lap of honour. Mansfield Town FC can have all the that this year – support them, follow them everywhere, enjoy the success. Football’s a beautiful game, only when it’s played properly and enjoyed in the same manner. David Holdsworth’s Barmy Army, giving Mansfield the Beautiful Game! 2009/10 is a time to believe, a time for success a time to chase the dream.
