Bring me sunshine…..

Sun, clear blue sky (when there’s no smoke flying about from local fires!) and Stags actually signing players before late July/ early August!! What”s going off?!?!

For once the Stags chief has not been forced into signing players he knows little about – research has been done and we have signed, im my opinion, good quality players who can most definitely do a job for us next season.

David Holdsworth has a good history of bringing decent players into this club: Scott Garner, Alan Marriott and Dayrl Clare being prime examples, so hopefully new signings such as Gary Mills, Luke Jones, Paul Heckingbottom, Jake Speight will become crowd favourites. One name sure to get a crowd reaction next season will be Dayrl Clare, who us fans were excited about when he came on loan from Rushden. Now we have aquired him on a permanent basis, perhaps he can get his best form back and bang in the goals.

Last week the squad went on a “team bonding day” funded by the SSA, and after watching the video from the offical website I was pleased to see that already the new players were fitting in and having a laugh. A few more days like this before the season begins and we will have the best morale in the league.

As you can guess I’m sat outside in the sunshine, so before the sun gets into my head and i forget what I’m writing, I’d like to wrap up by saying that I’m pleased to see us assembling a squad of quality players in time to treat pre-season not as a “play for a contract” game but as a “we’re ready and waiting” warning to other clubs. Pre-season doesn’t bring the best games in the world, we have no big names as such: Hartlepool, Walsall, Leicester and Ilkeston at home with Newport and Alfreton away, but if we can win these games and attract a few more through the door then I’m happy!

It was sad to hear that Richie Barker has retired from football – hopefully we will see him at Field Mill in a coaching role. Good luck to him in whatever he does.

I can hear the ice-cream van chimes, I have £1.60 in my pocket, hopefully that will be enough for a 99!? Sun, clear blue sky (no smoke in sight!) an ice cream and a stags squad destined for a good year: happy days!
